We, as with everyone in the community and television industry, are deeply saddened by this unspeakable and heinous crime. Some Bedford County schools went into an initial lockdown after the division received notice at about 7:25 a.m. of the shooting at Bridgewater Plaza, according to schools spokesman Ryan Edwards.
For Melanie Simmons, the principal of Moneta Elementary, which was the nearest school to the plaza where the shooting occurred it was a day of continuous vigilance.
“I tell parents … that they send me their kids every day and my No. 1 job is to send them home safely every day, and today was definitely one of those days,” she said.
